From the Founding in 1869 to the turn of the Century
The history of “Styria” begins with the founding of the “Katholischer Preßverein” in September 1869 in Graz. In an explosive political atmosphere, the Catholic Styrians took the initiative to create their own modern media work. In a time of prevailing aggressive cultural mood, their motivation was clearly defined: To achieve resistance against this development and to pursue enlightenment through journalistic work.
At the beginning of 1870 the “Vereinsbuchdruckerei” (Associations Book Printing Works) took up its work and the “Verlagsbuchhandlung” (Publishing Firm) was founded shortly thereafter. The “Grazer Volksblatt” and “Der Sonntagsbote” were the most important journalistic mouthpieces of that year. From 1880 onwards, the Preßvereinsanstalten traded under the name “Styria”. The circumspect business politics of the founding director Alois Karlon and the constant conformity to the newest technical standards contributed to the company`s consolidation and put them on the right tracks for a successful future.
